Using Action Items for KAMs
Action items are the steps in the plan that team members execute to move the plan toward completion. These action items are defined based on plan goals. For example:
- understanding who is the employee in charge of clinical trial approvals
- reaching out for education about the clinical trial
- distributing pamphlets to HCPs
Who can use this feature?
- Browser, iPad Users
- Users do not require an additional license
- KAM Users
Configuring Action Items for

To configure this feature:
-
Ensure Configuring Accounts is complete.
- Ensure Validation Rules on Mobile Devices are configured and refreshed if using mobile devices. This is required to validate the Start Date is before the Due Date when creating or editing an action Item.
- Grant users Create, Read, and Edit permission to the kam__v object type on the action_item__v object.
- Grant users Edit permission to all fields on the action_item__v object.
-
Activate the VMOCs associated with the action_item__v object. Use the following three VMOC WHERE clauses for this feature:
- WHERE ownerid__v = @@USER_ID@@ OR assignee__v = @@USER_ID@@
- WHERE account__v IN (SELECT id FROM account__vr)
- WHERE account_plan__v IN (SELECT id FROM account_plan__vr)
These VMOCs allow users to retrieve action items they own or are assigned to, action items pertaining to an account they own, and action items that are part of an account plan to which they have visibility, respectively. To use all three VMOCs in conjunction, set the sync_configuration_mode__v Veeva Setting to 1.
-
Ensure the account_plan_object_hierarchy__v Veeva Setting includes action items. The default value for this setting is: plan_tactic__v.account_plan__vr,account_tactic__v.plan_tactic__vr,action_item__v.account_tactic__vr.
The lowest level of the account plan hierarchy can either be action items or call objectives. Using both at the same time is not supported. Profile-level settings should have the same value as the Vault-level setting. Different values are not supported.
To enable enhanced progress calculation using action items, see Calculating Account Plan Progress Using the Account Plan Hierarchy.
Optional Configuration
- Expose or remove fields on the KAM Action Item layout.
- Expose the Action Items related list on all appropriate account plan layouts to allow KAMs to create action items from the Account Plan tab.
Creating Action Items as

KAMs create action items manually from the Action Items related list. If the Action Items related list was exposed on the Account Plan layout during configuration, the related list displays on the Account Plan tab.
To create a new Action Item:
-
Select the appropriate account plan from the list in the Account Plan tab.
-
Select the Action Items related list.
-
Select New.
-
Enter the appropriate information for the action item.
- Select Save or Save & New to create the new action item.
Using Action Items as

Action items can be used in many ways, including the following:
- Targeted to a specific account once an account is determined
- Not assigned to a specific user
- Not targeted to a specific account
- Assigned to a specific user to execute on a specific account
- Not completed as a part of a call
For example, a plan may include the following actions:
- Deliver new formulary information to stakeholders - May not need to be targeted to a specific account because the information needs to be provided to all accounts
- Share clinical trial data with stakeholders - May not need to be assigned to a specific user if the account is a large health system and is covered by multiple team members
- Conduct speaker training - May not need to be completed as part of a call if the training is scheduled as an event
- Share clinical trial data with stakeholders - May be assigned to a specific account and user, and be completed as part of a call
